A participant at a speech I recently gave at the University of Massachusetts pointed out that I wrote the above in Confessions of An Economic Hit Man. That book was published in late 2004. Since then, the role of the corporatocracy has become more apparent to more people on every continent, including North America.

Everywhere I go these days, I hear people freely admitting that the men (and a very few women) who run our government and biggest businesses are out of control. The corporatocracy — along with its greed and willingness to kill its own people, as a well as those it calls “enemy” — has been exposed. With this changing consciousness comes a greater responsibility for us all to speak out and to take actions that will change this terrible situation. We must each plumb the depths of our souls, look to our passions and talents, and commit to those actions that are appropriate for each of us as individuals and as members of the world community.

Our own government, in alliance with the big corporations and banks, has created an empire that imposes servitude, misery and death on millions of people. As a result, we who reside within the walls of the empire find ourselves surrounded by a field of fear that has been constructed by those who fatten their wallets by claiming to defend themselves (and us) against what they assert is tyranny.

This field of fear has replaced the terror we once felt of leering Bolsheviks, Communist infiltrators, and the “Red Wave” we were told would swept out of Vietnam if we lost that war. We rid ourselves of the Communists, lived in relative security for a brief moment in history, and now are assured that there is a new — and even greater — menace. Our nation has become terrified of suicide bombers, airplane hijackers, a mosque near Ground Zero, and neighbors who hail from different backgrounds.

We drain our economy to pay for airport guards who funnel us into metal detectors and paw through our most personal belongings and for private armies that slaughter innocent civilians in countries most of us will never visit. We allow ourselves to be told that tiny nail files are so dangerous they must be ripped from our nail clippers, that toothpaste tubes of more than 3 ounces threaten 747s, and that armies owned by millionaire supporters of our political parties are somehow more acceptable than ones staffed by military officers sworn to uphold our Constitution.

The sad truth is that our way of life is based on fear, our economy is dependent on war and so-called Homeland Security. This must end.

It is time to vacate the field of fear. We now need to call for President Obama to take the troops completely out of Iraq and Afghanistan as promised. We need to demand accountability for crimes that were committed by our forces and their leaders during the war. We need to cease relying on predatory capitalism as a way of being.

There will always be a few fanatics in the world — just as their will be mass murderers and rapists. But the fanatics are successful at gathering followers only when people feel desperate, mistreated, and hopeless. Acts of terrorism and desperation will end when enough of us demand that our corporations, banks, and government cease to exploit the majority of the world’s population and resources. Peace will arrive only when we insist on dealing with the world from a place of compassion – the very place I was taught that my dad and so many others defended during World War II.

It is essential that we send new messages to refute the old ones. Insist that our leaders look beyond profits, and produce goods and services that foster a better world. Demand compassion in our leadership before they demand more troops. Reach deep into our hearts and (to paraphrase the Bible) love our neighbors, both our perceived enemies and ourselves, so we can achieve a saver world in our lifetime.

The hour is indeed ours. You and I must take action.

 And we’ve seen Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez in response saying ,  “We have established some principles. We have set the foundation stone of our new relationship. Now we must look after it with very sensitive efforts.”

 I think the term sensitive efforts is important because while the news is good that this happened, it is up to all of us to continue the pressure on President Santos so that he does not resort to the draconian tactics of his predecessor and former boss, President Uribe.  We must continue to let our voices be heard because Santos must be willing to follow through with his statement of advancing the relationship and not resort to terror or other threats that have characterized Colombia’s attitude toward Venezuela and Ecuador in the past. We must also recognize that Santos, like Uribe, will be pressured by Washington, especially the CIA, to make life uncomfortable for both Chavez and Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa. I thank you all for the actions you have taken. Let us all see this as a guiding light, prove that we the people have the power to create a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world.

I receive lots of emails about the subjects listed above. In recent days I have been inundated with emails from people who believe the U.S. is about to take action against the Chavez administration in Venezuela and that the action will appear as a grass-roots movement initiated in Colombia . Many ask me to speak out against this.

I have no inside information as to whether or not this is true but I do know that Washington was elated at the election of its puppet, Juan Manuel Santos, to the presidency of Colombia, by the agreement to establish seven new U.S. military bases on Colombian soil, and that “wars on drugs” are often supported by the CIA as a way of financing its own “Black Ops” and also as an excuse for donating US military aid to countries that then are required to purchase equipment made by the corporatocracy (this model was perfected by the British during the 1800s Opium Wars and further refined by the CIA in Asia’s Golden Triangle).

Many of my Latin American friends are convinced that the rising drug violence in Mexico is a response to the success of the Colombia drug wars – that it reflects the corporatocracy’s determination to take greater control over Mexico, and through it, Central America, and that it is manipulated by the CIA. I can not verify the validity of this theory but it would be not inconsistent with things I experienced as an economic hit man. The fact that so many people are so deeply suspicious of Washington’s motives sends a strong signal.

I am speaking out at every opportunity I have. On radio shows, at events where I lecture, and in my writings. I want to urge you to join me and to ask all your friends and your Facebook and Twitter connections to do so also. You and I have the power to prevent such actions – in Venezuela, Iran and throughout the world. We MUST exercise that power. These times are our testing ground.

The tired war machine that our country’s leaders revert to in order to promote long-term economic gain for just a few elite must cease.

I’m asking for your help and your participation in raising a storm. Pick an issue or issues – any of the ones listed at the beginning of this article, or others that draw on your personal passions. Please do all the following and together our voices will be heard:

1. Write to every blog you can about this and link to ones that battle corporatocracy
2. Write letters to your local newspapers
3. Send emails to your elected officials
4. Do not buy from BP, Exxon, Chevron/Texaco (destroyed large sections of the Amazon), or Shell (responsible for the hanging of Ken Saro-Wiwa and his companions in Nigeria). If you must buy gas, do it from Citgo; a Venezuela-owned corporation, it is also the only major oil company that finances education and health services to some of the world’s most impoverished people. Write emails to all these companies telling them why you are taking such actions.

We know that all the blustering of the Pentagon and White House over the Wikileaks disclosures is another indication that Washington is trying to cover up the crimes it commits in its rush toward resource domination. Rather than focusing on the real crimes committed by our troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere and the need to bring the guilty parties to trial and assure that such acts are never repeated, the U.S. government directs its energy at ferreting out the whistleblowers.

What we have to do is stop being hoodwinked by the communications people who constantly try to thwart us from reacting to the real issues at hand. We must start demanding transparency in our government and corporations and in their dealings with other countries. We must not let the U.S. propaganda networks blind us with fear. We must not reengage the old war machine in order to create a false economic boost for our country and devastation for so many others.

These are times when the corporatocracy is attempting to consolidate its power. It is up to each and every one of us to stand firm against those attempts. A line is being drawn in the sand in places like Venezuela and Iran. By the attack on Wikileaks. And the crimes of BP. Please take my hand and step across that line with me. United we will stop the U.S. from marching further to the drum of corporatocracy imperialism.

Forget Stephen King novels.

If you want some really scary bedtime reading, I’m going to recommend John Perkins new non-fiction book, Hoodwinked. It’ll leave you afraid to turn off the lights at night.

Hoodwinked is the sequel to Perkins’ previous book, Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, and it is an eyes wide awakener. You’ll feel like you’ve been living in La-La Land all your life after reading the no-bullshit revelations about how the world’s corporatocracy really operates.

You might also feel like taking a long, hot shower because learning how American businesses really operate around the world is more alarming than any Oliver Stone paranoid cinematic fantasy.

It’s almost too wild a tale; it would be easier to believe if the book was just one story of naked greed and ambition, but Hoodwinked is page after page of ugly Americanism.
